Holistic Wellness: The Ayurvedic Path to a Balanced, Healthy Life
By Dr. Dipti Deshpande, BAMS | Holistic Health & Ayurvedic Lifestyle Expert | Swaanubhutii, Pune
In my decade of practice as an Ayurvedic physician, perhaps the most important truth I’ve come to understand is this: health is not merely the absence of disease. True health — Swasthya in Sanskrit — means being established in one’s own self. It means your body functions without effort, your mind is clear, and your spirit is at ease. This is what holistic wellness means in the Ayurvedic tradition, and it is what we strive to help every patient achieve at Swaanubhutii.
The Three Pillars of Ayurvedic Health
Ayurveda’s foundational text, the Charaka Samhita, describes three pillars (Trayopastambha) upon which health rests: Ahara (diet and nutrition), Nidra (sleep), and Brahmacharya (energy conservation and balanced living). In my clinical experience, when a patient presents with a chronic condition, disruption in one or more of these pillars is almost always at the root.
- Ahara: What you eat, when you eat, and how you eat are all clinically significant. Ayurveda emphasises warm, freshly cooked, seasonal food eaten mindfully — never while distracted, rushed, or emotionally disturbed.
- Nidra: Inadequate or irregular sleep is one of the greatest disease-causing factors in modern life. It disrupts immunity, hormonal balance, mental clarity, and metabolic function. Ayurveda recommends sleeping by 10 pm and waking before or at sunrise.
- Brahmacharya: In a modern context, this pillar refers to the wise management of energy — avoiding overexertion, excessive screen time, emotional turbulence, and the constant stimulation that depletes our vital force (Ojas).
Dinacharya: The Ayurvedic Daily Routine for Optimal Health
Dinacharya — the Ayurvedic daily routine — is one of the most powerful preventive health practices available. It is not a rigid schedule but a rhythm: a set of morning and evening practices that align the body’s biological clock with the rhythms of nature.
Key Dinacharya practices I recommend to patients include: waking before sunrise (Brahma Muhurta), tongue scraping (Jihwa Nirlekhana) to remove overnight-accumulated Ama, oil pulling (Kavala) for oral and systemic health, Abhyanga (oil self-massage) before bathing, yoga or Pranayama for 20–30 minutes, and eating dinner before 7:30 pm to allow adequate digestion before sleep.
I have seen patients completely transform their energy levels, digestion, skin health, and mental clarity simply by consistently following Dinacharya — without any medication.
The Gut-Brain-Skin Axis: Why Ayurveda Was Always Right
Modern medical research has now established what Ayurvedic physicians have described for over 3,000 years: the gut, brain, and skin are deeply interconnected. Imbalanced gut flora leads to systemic inflammation, which manifests as skin disorders, mental health issues, fatigue, and immune dysfunction.
In Ayurveda, all disease begins in the gut (Ama-pachana — the digestion of toxins is the first step of all treatment). This is why, regardless of the presenting complaint, my treatment protocols at Swaanubhutii always begin with an assessment of digestive health and the prescription of Deepana-Pachana herbs to restore Agni (digestive fire).
Mental Wellness Through Ayurveda
Stress is the epidemic of our generation. In Ayurveda, chronic stress is understood as a Vata and Pitta aggravating condition that depletes Ojas — the subtle essence of immunity and vitality. My clinical approach to stress and anxiety involves a combination of: Shirodhara therapy for nervous system regulation, Ashwagandha and Brahmi formulations for adaptogenic support, Nasya for mental clarity, and dietary and lifestyle modifications.
I regularly see patients who have been on anxiolytics or antidepressants for years experience significant improvement — and in many cases, reduction in medication under medical supervision — through consistent Ayurvedic treatment.
